It’s not social media. It’s personal.
Someday, you’ll want to hear it again.
Your camera roll remembers what they looked like. It doesn’t remember what they were like — the voice, the mispronunciations, the laugh you were certain you’d never forget. The Scraps is a private place to keep those.
eleven seconds, an ordinary Tuesday
You will photograph perhaps two hundred of them. Birthdays, beaches, the first day of school — the ones you already know are worth keeping.
It’s the other six thousand that turn out to be the childhood. And of those, the part that fades first isn’t the face. It’s the sound.
One dot, one month. Lit: the ones you’ll still be able to hear.
The little things
The moments you don’t think to save.
Most scraps are a few seconds long. That’s the point — short enough that you’ll actually do it on an ordinary Tuesday, which is where almost all of childhood happens.
“Mama, is the moon following us?”
“I love you more than pancakes.”
How it works
Three seconds of effort. Kept for good.
-
Hold the button
One thumb, no setup, no captions to write. Video, or just their voice. It saves even with no signal — the upload catches up later, in the background.
-
It writes itself down
Every recording is transcribed on your iPhone — never on a server — so in four years you can search “spaghetti” and find the week she couldn’t say it.
-
It comes back to you
One ordinary morning your phone says one year ago today. And there they are, smaller, saying something you had completely forgotten.
The promise
No feed. No followers. No one but you.
Every other app wants your child’s face in front of strangers. This one is built so that isn’t possible.
-
Private by construction
There are no public profiles and no discovery. Nobody can find your child here, because there is nothing to find.
-
Never sold. Never trained on.
No ads, no data brokers, and your family’s videos will never be used to train anyone’s model — ours included.
-
Transcribed on your device
Speech recognition runs on your iPhone. The audio of your child’s voice is never sent anywhere to be read.
-
Yours, not ours
Leave whenever you like. Delete, and it is deleted — from our servers, not just from your screen — and we’ll always give you a way to take your originals with you.
And, just as plainly, what it isn’t.
- No feed to scroll, and nothing to scroll past.
- No likes, no follower count, no streaks.
- No advertising, now or later. The subscription is the business model.
- No face recognition, and no automatic tagging of anyone.
- No sharing yet — not a feature we’re hiding, one we haven’t built.
- No Android app yet, and no honest date to give you for one.
For someone else
The baby shower gift nobody else thinks of.
New parents receive eleven muslin swaddles and a wipe warmer. What nobody hands them is the thing they’ll actually want in fifteen years — and the window to start collecting it is open for about a decade, then closed forever.
Gift subscriptions and printed keepsake books are coming with launch. Join the waitlist and we’ll make sure you know first.
“I have four thousand photographs of my daughter’s first year and not one recording of what she sounded like. I would trade most of them for thirty seconds of that.”
— the reason this existsThis is a small thing built by a small number of people, which is the only honest way to say it. There is no growth team here deciding how to keep you opening the app. There is a bill for storage, and a subscription that pays it.
If something is broken, or missing, or you just want to tell us what you wish it did — write to hello@thescraps.com. It reaches a person.
the scraps Made in the evenings, for the mornings.Questions
Reasonable things to ask.
When can I actually use it?
It’s in private beta on iPhone right now. The waitlist is how invitations go out — small groups at a time, so we can talk to everyone who joins.
What will it cost?
There will be a free tier that’s genuinely usable, and a premium subscription for unlimited storage and full-resolution video. Final pricing lands with launch, and the waitlist hears it first.
Is there an Android version?
Not yet. iPhone first, so that one version can be properly good rather than two being adequate.
What happens to my memories if you go away?
The fair question, and one most apps dodge. If the service were ever wound down you’d get notice well in advance and a way to take every original file with you — that commitment is written into our terms, not just a blog post. A self-serve export is on the build list; until it ships, ask us and we’ll get you your files.
Who can see what I save?
You. Media is encrypted in transit and at rest, and is served only through short-lived links minted for your account after you sign in. The full detail is in the privacy policy, in plain language.
What do you do with my email address?
Hold it until we have something to tell you, then tell you. It isn’t sold, rented, or handed to an advertising network, and every message has a working unsubscribe link. Ask us to delete it and it’s gone the same day.
Start before you have anything to lose.
The best day to begin was the day they were born. The second best day is today.
